Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Considered by many to be one of the best art museums in the United States, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of Kansas City’s leading cultural assets. The museum expansion is an exciting project because of the engineering challenges presented by its distinctive architectural design. Broadway has been involved since the earliest phase of the expansion and we completed the garage addition in the summer of 2002. We oversaw the electrical aspects of the renovation to the facility’s central plant that included the installation of new distribution equipment, wiring for mechanical systems, and an emergency generator. The change over of power to the new service was complicated by the requirement to keep the facility systems up and running during the transition. We then routed new busway, emergency power conduit and cable tray from the central plant to the new building on the east side of the museum. The expansion project takes an extra degree of planning for the installation of electrical service and lighting because of the massive amounts of circuits and systems and the unusual elevations and angles in the building’s design. We will be installing the complete gallery lighting arrays and service for the automated motorized shade system. We are handling the entire telecommunications system and the cabling and installation of devices for the fire alarm and security/surveillance system. Broadway is excited to be involved with providing power, communications and lighting for a building that will truly be a work of art.
